Automatic vs Quartz Watches

Quartz watches run on a battery and a vibrating quartz crystal. They keep excellent time, need little attention and are usually slimmer.

Automatic watches are powered by the motion of your wrist. They hold a power reserve, typically run 24–48 hours off the wrist and require occasional servicing.

If you rotate between several watches, quartz is the practical choice. If you wear one watch daily and enjoy mechanical detail, automatic is worth the upkeep.
